From the Head of College

End of Year Thank You!

This past school year has been a remarkable 12 months for Concordia Lutheran College. We have achieved many things together, and the learning and teaching across the College has continued unabated with a high level of commitment, energy and purpose.

I would like to use this opportunity to thank our communications team (Mrs Christine Loan and Mrs Bianca Coleborn) for producing this weekly newsletter, along with many other fine publications throughout the year. Thank you for a job well done!

Over the past week, we have celebrated together on many levels. The support across the College community has been extraordinary and I pass on thanks to extended families, staff and students for a superb effort over these days and indeed throughout the year. Congratulations, one and all!

Concordia Lutheran College Uniform Guide

The College has developed an official Uniform Guide for families to reference regarding uniform expectations in 2020 and beyond. Please click here to access this guide. Thank you to our wonderful students who participated in the photo shoot earlier this year to illustrate the uniform.

One change that has been implemented is the expectation regarding sports shoes. Previously sports shoes were required to be predominantly white. However, we acknowledge the red dirt in our beautiful city makes white shoes difficult to maintain. Therefore, sports shoes may be predominantly white or predominantly blue moving forward.

This does mean that other coloured sports shoes are not acceptable with the College sports uniform, except in the case of sports specific shoes required, i.e. running spikes, netball-specific shoes etc.

There will be a grace period at SSC during Semester 1, after which time this expectation will be enforced.

Should you have any questions, please contact the relevant Director of Campus.

State Honours Ensemble Program

Congratulations to Yuan Cabahug, Jemma Welsh, Alistair Richards, Adam Armstrong, Luca Blyth, Finn Donald and Madeleine Busiko. This group of talented Junior College musicians will be representing Concordia at the State Honours Ensemble Program during the Christmas break.

Thank You and Farewell

This year we have been fortunate to have the expertise and talents of two extraordinary ladies at the Junior College.

Mrs Fiona Stone has capably led both the students and teachers into a whole new world of technology throughout 2019 and we will be sad to see her leave us at the end of this term. We wish Fiona all the best in all her endeavours in the future.

Frau Irena Kobald had been a wonderful addition to our team teaching German to our students in the absence of Frau El Attar who has been on maternity leave. The students have been exposed to not only the German language, but also the many other different languages that Frau Kobald is able to speak.

We say goodbye to both of these ladies, but hope that we cross paths with them again in the future.

We also say farewell to our Junior College Strings teacher, Mrs Katherine Elsworth who will also be leaving us at the end of the year. A huge thank you to Mrs Elsworth for all that she has contributed to our Strings Program over the years.

Junior College Semester 2 Report Cards will be available on Parent Lounge by Friday 6 December. You will be notified via email when this upload is complete.

JC Year 6 Big Day Out

What does swimming at Milne Bay, the Grand Central and Bazinga bowling all have in common? The Year 6 students on their Big Day Out of course. Students from both campuses joined together for a day of fun and socialisation. What a fantastic way to conclude their year.

News from Pastor Mark, Acting Director of Campus

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the staff of Hume Street Campus, to thank you for partnering with us this year as we work together to nurture children as they learn and grow. No doubt for each student there has been ups and downs and twists and turns as the year has gone on. You entrust to us the most precious thing in your world as day after day you drop your children off at school. This is indeed a responsibility that we do not take lightly and we thank you for entrusting this to us. We wish all the students a happy and holy Christmas and pray they have ample opportunities to switch off, recharge and refresh before the 2020 school year begins.

I also say a hearty ‘thank you’ to all the students for making this Campus what it is. It is an amazing community where students strive to achieve their own learning goals as they live and work together each and every day of the school week. We are blessed by the students we have and each one of them is a unique and precious gift from God that makes our Campus such a beautiful place to work and learn.

I’d also like to say a BIG ‘thank you’ to the amazing staff of Hume Street Campus. It has been a joy over these past weeks to see their dedication, enthusiasm, passion and professionalism as they have supported each student in their learning and nurtured them as they have developed throughout the year. Thank you, Staff, and may each of you enjoy a well-deserved break.

Concordia Lutheran College is a special place. It has a unique sense of community. It has been a privilege to be part of this community for the past five years and I am thankful to have experienced it. I wish each of you, especially the students, God’s richest blessings and all the very best for the future.

May the joy and peace that the Christ-child brings, stay with you long after the trees and the tinsel has come down.

Christmas blessings

Rev. Mark Blackwell

HSC Year 6 Celebration Dinner

The 2019 Conrad Carrigan Award

Conrad Carrigan was a student at MLPC from 1993-1998. He was a likeable character, with a great sense of fun, who worked hard for his results. Conrad suffered from Asthma. Sadly he was taken from this life by a severe attack in 1998 when he was in Year 6. Each year this bursary is awarded to a Year 5 student who is likeable, hardworking and contributes positively to the Campus environment.

Congratulations to Christian Sullivan for receiving this award.

The 2019 Borgelt Family Achievement Award

The Borgelt Family Achievement Award was established in 2002 and is presented to a Year 4 student. The award is based on a combination of personal growth and classroom achievements. Attitude, behaviour and character of the student should also reflect the Campus’ ethos and ideas.

Congratulations to Alvin Basukala for receiving this award.

The 2019 Martin Kretzchmar Lighthouse Award

Martin Kretzchmar was a teacher at MLPC from 1980 - 1988. Sadly he passed away while teaching at the school. In 1998, the Martin Kretzchmar Memorial Award was established in his memory and is presented to a Year 6 student. The recipient should display a good attitude towards the scriptures and Christian citizenship in the classroom, playground and in everyday life.

Congratulations to Bella Edwards for receiving this award.

Message from Director of Campus

It’s hard to believe that the end of the school year is here. The last 10 months have passed by so quickly! The year’s end always brings with it a sense of accomplishment, and so many things have been accomplished in 2019!

It’s not possible in this brief message to capture all of the amazing things that have happened at Warwick Street Campus throughout the year, but it is safe to say that students, staff and parents have experienced, and seen, the successful implementation of a wide range of new programs and activities.

We are all proud of the students at Warwick Street Campus and I would like to congratulate them on another successful school year. I would also like to wish those who are leaving our community all the very best for your future endeavours and hope that you will look back fondly on your time spent at Concordia.

To the incredible staff at WSC, I thank you for your support this year and your constant dedication to your role on our Campus. Your Christmas break is truly well deserved.

As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, Christmas blessings to you all, and I look forward with eagerness and anticipation to 2020.

Mrs Jackie Minnikin
Director of Campus

A Message from the WSC P&F

On behalf of the WSC P&F, I’d like to thank you all very much for your support throughout 2019.

To parents who generously gave their time to help, to those whose businesses donated prizes for our Trivia Night, and those who sent along some change to support the various fundraisers throughout the year – thank you.

Together we raised in excess of $10,000!

This brings our P&F account to just over $34,000 which should be enough to finally realise our dreams of some playground upgrades. Watch this space!

Wishing you all a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year

Mrs Bron Loughlin
WSC P&F Sub-Committee Chairperson

Heuschele Award

Congratulations to Jemma Welsh!

Mrs Mary Heuschele was a teacher at Concordia Primary for 22 years and established the “Heuschele Award for Citizenship in a School Setting”. This award is presented to a student who shows a positive attitude, respect to both staff and other students and who generally tries to behave in a way that is fitting for a student in a Christian school.

As a society we always recognise the achievements which our students have made in the academic field, musically and on the sporting field. This award acknowledges the relevance of a courteous, good-natured, God-centred outlook and we should remember that all our other achievements are also only possible by God’s grace.

This award recognises a student who has consistently displayed this loving concern and respect for others.

Congratulations to Jemma Welsh on receiving this award in 2019.

Year 7 Orientation Day a Success!

On Monday 25 November, 38 Year 6 students had the opportunity to meet their Year 7 Home Class teachers Ms Nicarla Hindle and Ms Shalindi Jayasuriya at the Year 7 Orientation Day at Stephen Street Campus.

Mrs Roslyn Cook, Mrs Carissa Jaworska, Mr Jason Smith, Mrs Michelle Price and both the Senior and Middle College Leaders were also there to welcome the students.

Throughout the day the visiting students participated in many varied activities. Some even included a sample of their elective subjects, Food and Fibre, Design and Technology and Dance.

The day concluded with the Year 11 Peer Support Leaders, running three different team building activities for the students to enable them to get to know their fellow peers.

As the students were leaving to enjoy afternoon tea, many said that they had enjoyed the day and were looking forward to starting Year 7 in the new year.

Middle College Students Ride or Slide

On Thursday 28 November, 119 students and 7 staff members had an action-packed BIG day out at Dreamworld and Whitewater World at Coomera.

Some students enjoyed the refreshing, cool water  and slides, while other students opted to go on the exhilarating rides in the theme park. Many people even caught a glimpse of the tiger cubs wrestling in the tiger enclosure.

Overall, it was a day which enabled both students and staff to simply enjoy hanging out with their friends celebrating another eventful year in the Middle College.

Mrs Roslyn Cook
Middle College Coordinator

Year 8 English Guest Speaker

Earlier this week, Year 8 English students welcomed guest speaker, Ms Henrietta Lee, Editor-in-Chief of Bella Rae magazine. She spoke to students about the magazine production process and the challenges facing the industry. Thank you, Henrietta!

Sports Uniforms ready to order!

The new sports uniforms for 2020 and beyond are now available to order! Please click here to access the online ordering for the following sports:

  • Rugby Union
  • Basketball
  • Volleyball, Soccer and Touch Football*
  • Track & Field

*The same uniform can be worn across all three sports - this will limit the number of uniforms that students are required to purchase.

Year 11 Secret Santa

Last Friday, Year 11 students gathered in the Year 12 Commons room to partake in a whole year level Secret Santa. Students had three weeks to purchase a specific person a gift valued between $10 and $15 and had the help of a gift ideas list.

Everyone was super excited and there were lots of quirky, personalised and yummy gifts. This was a rewarding activity to commend our incredible efforts throughout the year, by adapting to the new ATAR curriculum and starting our Units 1, 2 and 3 assessment.

Many of the other year levels also held a Secret Santa gift-giving exchange, with many students delighted to receive a gift from someone they may not have known very well or a close friend.

Boarding

Boarding News

Hello, and welcome to the last The Week Ahead for 2019.

We have had a very busy week in boarding. Some of the week’s events included:

  • Lots of cleaning, and moving of rooms (maybe not so much fun)
  • A lunch time BBQ, cooked beautifully by the boarders, led superbly by a happy, loud, singing group of PNG students (potential chefs)
  • Carols by Candlelight, held at the Hume Street Campus of Concordia Lutheran College, which was enjoyed by all the boarders, whether it was the singing, being under the stars, or the lollies supplied by Ms Maureen.

Welcome from the Leadership Team
