The Week Ahead - Term 4, Week 8

Monday 25 November to Friday 29 November 2019

From the Head of College

End of Year Activities

In the coming weeks we will be enjoying the Warwick Street Campus Musical, Concordia Lutheran College Christmas Carols at Hume Street Campus, Orientation Day, Celebration Dinners for Year 6 students, end of year Worship, fun activities for all students and, of course, completing the study programs for the year. I wish everyone well for the ‘run home’ to the holidays.

NAPLAN Online
As school communities across Australia are aware, NAPLAN Online will be introduced into every school. We will be carrying out a trial with our students to ensure that our technology is robust and ‘NAPLAN ready’ for next year and beyond. I emphasise that this IS NOT NAPLAN or additional testing, but simply a way for us to work with the Authority in order to ensure that we are in good shape for future testing.
A few selected classes will be involved for short periods of time on Tuesday or Wednesday depending on the Campus. Students will be aware of the purpose of the exercise next week and the sessions are design to not interfere with end of term programs. Please contact Directors of Campus if there are any questions.

An Invitation – This Sunday
In the coming week, we will be focusing on completing the year’s work and preparing for events such as the Carols by Candlelight evening at Hume Street Campus on Sunday 24 November. This is a whole of College event and all members of our community are welcome to join with us as we celebrate the birth of our Lord Christ Jesus. Further details are available in this publication and I look forward to being with you on this occasion.

Kindest regards

Mr Adrian Wiles
Head of College

Advent

The season of Advent invites us to prepare for the coming of Christ – at Christmas and at the end of time. I see this season a little like playing a game of pass the parcel. This game is a favourite for most children as they pass the present around eagerly hoping the music will stop so that they get to unwrap a layer of the gift. Each time the music stops, a layer is removed and there is often a chocolate or small toy that signifies the layers are almost off and the final gift or prize is ready to be revealed.

Project Based Learning at Concordia

Junior College

JC Inter-House Swimming Carnival

Recently, Concordia hosted its annual Junior College Inter-House Swimming Carnival and what a fantastic day it was for all concerned. From the first House War Cries at 8.30am, the students never stopped, ranging from their individual races, through to the House spirit encouraging each other, enjoying the great meal deal and sweets stall on offer and most importantly, having fun and enjoying the mateship that comes with sporting endeavours such as this day.

JC Sporting Schools Programs - Term 4

Over 50 students each week have been participating in the Sporting Schools Program in the sports of Touch, Cricket and AFL. The four weekly sessions were held during or after school at both WSC and HSC.

The students involved in this program had a great time learning new activities, techniques and skills associated with these games, led by various Development staff from respective associations and sports.

Many thanks to the parents who came along each week to support these sessions. Well done to all involved. It is impressive to see our students involved in these great opportunities.

JC Friday Night Basketball

Last Friday night saw the conclusion of the ever-popular Friday Night Junior School Basketball Competition.

Concordia entered a Junior Boys team this year and have been busy training twice a week and getting some combinations on the court with a good mix of students - some new to the game and some old hands in the mix. The team has been coached by Head of Basketball, Darryl Allen and Morgan Harland with Mrs Leesa Pailthorpe assisting also by managing the team each week at the fixtures at various venues.

The improvement each week has been a credit to the players and their tenacity and dedication to training with some good results following. Games were played in fantastic spirit and sportsmanship.

Well done to all players and the coaches. These players will be the nucleus for Basketball teams of the future in what is a very exciting time with our programs and links with not only our Middle and Senior Colleges but also the All Stars Basketball Club. Special mention to the parents and supporters who came along each week to cheer on the players.

NAPLAN Online

Next week, our Campus will be involved in checking the robustness of our technological capabilities as we prepare for NAPLAN online in the future. On Tuesday, Year 3 students will be involved in a run through of an online NAPLAN test. May I stress that this is by no means an examination of the students (no results will be collected), it is simply an opportunity to test our technological capabilities and our internet speed as we endeavour to log in multiple users undertaking the test at the same time. We will stress this with the students so we can alleviate any angst and reassure them that it is simply a run through to test and ensure we have the capabilities to successfully implement NAPLAN online in the future. This test will be conducted at HSC, WSC and SSC.

Library Books & Home Readers

All library books and home readers must be returned as soon as possible please. Cost of replacing any outstanding items will be debited to your school accounts.

Thanks for a Great Year!

What a year! Shown below is a summary of our new Year 11 subjects that we have implemented this year. Whilst we may be a boutique school, we pride ourselves in being able to provide a high-quality curriculum of significant breadth and depth. As you can see, it’s quite a list… 30 brand new subjects in total implemented this year.

Valedictory and Farewells

Last Thursday, we farewelled our Year 12 students.

The day started with a lovely alfresco breakfast and they then entertained us with an amazing chapel service. The evening was completed with the Valedictory Dinner at The USQ Refectory. It was a wonderful night.

Sport News

AFL

Over the last four weeks, AFL Queensland has been conducting training sessions for our girls who are competing in the TPSS AFL Competition on Friday afternoons. The girls have done a fantastic job of refining their kicking and handballing skills, and despite the warmer weather would always be willing to run plenty of drills!

Good luck to the girls in their final games today!

New Sports Uniforms for 2020

As part of our commitment to enhancing Concordia's sporting profile under the Stategic Plan, new sports uniforms have been developed for 2020.

Please click here to see the artwork for the new uniforms for the following sports:

  • Rugby Union
  • Basketball
  • Volleyball, Soccer and Touch Football*
  • Track & Field

*The same uniform can be worn across all three sports - this will limit the number of uniforms that students are required to purchase.

There are also additional items including bike pants, tights and dance shorts available for purchase. These items may be purchased in addition to full uniform kits and may be purchased by students to wear for dance and cocurricular sport activities.

There are samples of the items available from Mrs Jana Anderson's office which located opposite the Function Centre (previously Director of Boarding office) during morning tea and lunch times.

Items are for purchase, not loan. The online ordering system will go live during week commencing Monday 25 November. An email will be sent to parents when this is available.

Uniforms may be purchased in the new year, however these items will not have the option of having the student's surname printed on the back. All orders that are made this year will have the option of having the name printed at no additional cost.

If you would like more information regarding the new uniforms, please contact our Sports Coordinator, Mrs Jana Anderson, at sport@concordia.qld.edu.au or call 4688 2700 and dial 1 for Stephen Street Campus.

Boarding

Boarding News

Hello, and welcome to another week of Boarding News!

Of course, last week’s big event was the graduation of the Year 12 students.

As Housemother Ms Maureen said, “We have a very diverse boarding family, who bond together to make our Learning in Residence what it is today. Students have displayed great pride in their respective Boarding houses and on any day, there are sounds of laughter and excitement coming from rooms and common areas. While it is was sad to bid farewell to our Year 12 students, they have left their individual marks and impressions on many of us.”

However, before they left, our 2020 Boarding Captain, Dusty Burton, took a few unforgettable photos. The one below is one of our favourites and includes staff, boarding and day student graduates, and younger students, which shows a true and glowing picture of the fellowship at Concordia. See the gallery below for more of these photos.

We wish all the 2019 Year 12 graduating boarders every success in the future, and we ask them to remember the valuable lessons of life they learnt during their time in Concordia boarding.
