The Week Ahead - Term 3, Week 10

Monday 14 September to Friday 18 September 2020

From the Head of College

End of Term

During the past week I have been reading a book entitled Anxious for nothing – finding calm in a chaotic world (Lucado: 2017). How timely this has been as we enter the last week of Term 3 and reflect on where we have been and on what lies ahead. As Christians, we are urged to ‘leave our concerns with God’ and to do this with the knowledge that Christ has walked the journey with us and will continue to do so in the months and years ahead.

With this in mind, we as a school community will spend the next few days completing those matters that need tidying up, planning for the next few months, and understanding the value of a break away from the daily flow of being in school. But the work does not stop there! The Concordia Lutheran College Council and Lutheran Education Queensland are progressing the future plans for Lutheran education in Toowoomba through a series of workshops and wide ranging discussions beginning with revisiting our existing Strategic Plan – launched last year but placed on hold throughout the past six months. It is heartening to know that much of the earlier work still ‘holds true’ despite the changing and challenging environment in which we find ourselves. Leadership will also meet before this term closes to consider the key discussion points, and next term will be a time to re-engage with staff and community around the vision for the future.

Please continue to keep our boarding community in your prayers. Our international students have not been home since January and they will be spending yet another holiday without being with their parents and family. We are pleased that all other boarding students can leave Concordia and return ‘unencumbered’ – a sensible and safe outcome for all involved.

Please remember those key ‘safe school’ points that were introduced six months ago and remain even more important than ever before. Social distancing of 1.5 metres, hand sanitisation, coughing protocols including safe disposal of tissues, and do not come to school if you are not well - all key measures that will keep us safe as a community.

Kind regards and every blessing

Festival of Learning
Our Festival of Learning looked a bit different this year, however, the excitement in the students and their amazing learning, was no different. They arrived excited, spent the morning finalising their projects and then shared their learning with all students in the school. Each class took turns visiting another class and viewing their work, then swapping over to share their learning and answering questions about their projects.

An overview of the project learning of each year level …

  • Prep – Marble Runs
  • Year 1 – The Chook Nook with chook pens
  • Year 2 – Life Cycles of MiniBeasts
  • Year 3 and Year 4 – Invention Convention
  • Year 5 Gold Rush
  • Year 6 Canberra

All students used elements of their Science/HASS curriculum, Design and Technology, and report writing in their presentations. Many added Visual Arts and cooking into their project as well.

Check out Seesaw and Facebook for more photos.

Getting to Know our HSC Staff

Natalie Blackwell - Prep Teacher

I am:
• so proud of my two children as they grow into young adults (even though the Preps are convinced I can’t be a Mum because I am a teacher!)
• still learning every single day
• so blessed to be a part of the teaching team at Hume Street Campus

In my working life I have:
• taught in three different states of Australia
• worked in the Early Childhood sector for over 15 years in Lutheran Education as a Kindergarten Director and Teacher

When I’m not busy singing sight word songs, I love:
• spending time with my beautiful family
• finding joy in the simple things of life
• cooking up a storm (as long as I don’t have to wash up!)

No Tuckshop This Week

Please note: There is no Tuckshop this week. It will recommence in Term 4, Week 2.

Warwick Street Campus

From the Director

In a year where many of the regular rhythms of school life have been disrupted, and our times are still uncertain, it was only fitting to acknowledge R U OK? Day yesterday. The Warwick Street Campus students enjoyed spending time with their buddies to ask if they were OK by using emojis as conversation starters. In a year that has been quite different for us all, it was easy to hear through the conversations yesterday, that our students are OK.

As we continue with our drop off and pick up procedures this term, I would like to remind parents of the following:

  • We have noticed a large number of parents and caregivers trying to turn right when exiting the Drive Through onto Warwick Street. This causes congestion in the Drive Through and back onto Yaldwyn Street. It is much safer to turn left onto Warwick Street.
  • Drop off in the morning is through the Yaldwyn Street Drive Through only. Please do not drop your children in The Shed car park or at the front entrance glass doors.
  • Students must remain in the car in the mornings until a teacher is present at 8am. They must not be left in the Drive Through unattended.

We appreciate your patience and support with our drop off and pick up procedures so we can ensure the safety of our students.

As we move into the last week of the term, I am excited to see the achievements of our students. I look forward to sharing in the Year 4 Individuals of Eminence, as well as participating in some of the “Canned-berra” activities with our Year 6 class.

Drama News

Congratulations to Senior Drama student, Mason Lindenmayer, for his outstanding result in the Queensland Theatre’s Young Playwrights’ Award, with his entry of a full-length play script A Little Too Soon. Incredibly, he was shortlisted to the top four scripts in a highly competitive field of young playwrights across the state.

Queensland Theatre’s Young Playwrights’ Award is one of Australia’s longest running annual playwriting competitions for young writers, and as a shortlisted entrant, Mason was lucky to be offered one-on-one feedback with a professional playwright to help him refine his work and inspire him to continue writing.

Writing a full length script takes remarkable effort and what an exceptional achievement to get so far in the competition. Congratulations Mason!

Careers News

The Careers Department at Concordia Lutheran College is excited to announce our newest initiative, Speed Interviews 2020.

We are bringing together industry professionals with students in Years 10 to 12 who are interested in an apprenticeship or traineeship, either fulltime (Year 12) or school-based.

As the name suggests, the idea of Speed Interviews comes from the concept of speed dating, and the format is pretty similar. A number of stations will be set up that students move between, with an interviewer at each station conducting a short interview. Our goal is that the students will be able to register with these companies and then work with them to find a suitable job placement.

Special Leave Requirements

We encourage all students to be on campus until the last day of Term 3 on 17 September. If you wish to depart for holidays prior to this date, please complete the Special Leave Approval form
