The Week Ahead - Term 4, Week 6

Monday 11 November to Friday 15 November 2019

From the Head of College

Valedictory Week

Week 6 is a very significant week for our College community with a number of important events taking place.

On Monday night we will recognise the achievements of our Years 7 to 12 students at the Presentation Evening event taking place at the Empire Theatre. This is a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate our students and to enjoy some special performances that will showcase the talents of our students.

The Presentation Evening is the first of several events that will farewell our Year 12 students for 2019. We are delighted that parents from remote parts of Australia and from overseas will be joining us to take part in these important events.

The Valedictory Dinner on Thursday 14 November will see the students make their "arrivals" at Redlands House with the picture perfect Pear Shape Garden in the background. It is always wonderful to see so many past and present students and their families come to this event to support our graduands and we look forward to seeing another big crowd again this year.

For the first time, the Valedictory Dinner will be held at the University of Southern Queensland. We look forward to a wonderful evening followed by the final Valedictory Service on Friday 15 November in the Chapel.

I look forward to catching up with many of you over the course of these special events.

Mr Adrian Wiles
Head of College

From the College Pastor

Abundance!

With Jesus there are always leftovers! No one need go hungry when Jesus is around. Recently in Chapel we heard the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000, using just five loaves of bread and two fish! And once everyone had been fed and felt satisfied, Jesus told the disciples to pick up the leftovers. None of it was to go to waste. They could then use this food to feed others. In all they picked up 12 baskets of leftover food!  Not bad from just five loaves and two fish!

Sports Breakfast

This morning I had the pleasure to attend the Concordia Lutheran College Sports Breakfast.

It was a great morning celebrating the dedication, hard work and achievements of students from across the College.

This year’s guest speaker was Mrs Gemma Etheridge who won a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics representing Australia playing Rugby 7s. Gemma inspired the audience as she spoke to the students about the importance of team work and resilience. Just a few months away from the Olympics, Gemma damaged her ACL for the third time. She was determined to give it her all in the hope of being able to recover in time for the Olympics. Gemma made the team and went on to win GOLD for Australia.

A Note from Pastor Mark, Acting Director of Campus

Dear Parents/Caregivers

It is hard to believe that we are well and truly into the month of November. We certainly have some busy days ahead, so I encourage you to keep an eye on The Week Ahead so that you know what is happening on which day.

On behalf of the Hume Street Campus community, I wish Mrs Priest well as she deserves a well-earned break enjoying time with her family (how exciting to have her daughter and granddaughter back home in Australia for a few weeks!).  Juanetta does amazing work as the Director of Hume Street Campus and we are blessed to have her serve and lead this wonderful community.

If I can be of assistance over these coming weeks, please feel free to contact me at Hume Street Campus.

2020 HSC Leaders

We have had the pleasure of electing our Campus Captains this week. We would like to thank all the students who have nominated for positions. It is a lot of work in getting speeches ready and not an easy task to put yourself on the line knowing you may get it or may not. We are very proud of our students and we look forward to them being our leaders in 2020.

Year 6 Celebration Dinner – RSVP 12 November

Outdoor Classroom Day

What a BLAST! We had so much fun on Wednesday with nine outdoor rotations. We played some challenging games and had fun getting grubby and wet. The outdoor classroom day was so much fun.

I really enjoyed making damper and stirring the mixture. Rolling the dough in the flour was so much fun. Passing the cups over our head with water was probably the hardest thing because a lot of people got wet. We had fun with Mr T doing leaf printing and had a good time with Mrs Burrows making alfoil rivers. We also made tents with wool. It was hard to keep the tent stable because the bases kept on falling apart. We cracked cool codes and made pictures out of dirt and sticks. My favourites were probably the water balloons and making damper. I had fun working with the Kindies and looking after them.

Overall we had an amazing two and a half hours of Outdoor Learning.

German Student Exchange in Australia

Last week we said goodbye to the German exchange students from our two partner schools in Hamburg  after spending two weeks here at Concordia and Faith Lutheran College. This is the fourth time Concordia has welcomed the German exchange students to Australia on the school exchange program. Students have stayed with host families and attended school with their buddies throughout their time in Toowoomba. The tour group had an excursion to the Sunshine Coast and even tried playing and learning AFL and cricket.

Valedictory Arrivals

It’s that exciting time of year again when we are so proud to hold the Year 12 Valedictory Arrivals outside Redlands. This year, we request that all visitors/spectators to the Valedictory Arrivals enter SSC via Stephen Street using the driveway which runs along the Harristown State High School fence, with parking to be on the oval below CSI. Your cooperation will be most appreciated. The Arrivals will begin at 5.30pm.

Kowanyama Primary School Students Visit Concordia

On Wednesday 6 November, Year 7 students had some very shy Year 5 visitors sit in on either a Maths or History lesson. After their classroom visit, while touring around the campus, some of the visiting students even enjoyed the opportunity to join the Year 9 students for a soccer skill game and the Year 8 students for a basketball drill.

The Year 5 students come from Kowanyama Primary school which is inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria approximately 19-hour drive to Cairns in far North Queensland. They are currently visiting Toowoomba schools, USQ and exploring the local attractions for the week.

For many of the students, this is the first time that they had travelled by plane or been away from home. When they were asked about what they had enjoyed the most about their brief visit to Concordia, a few of the students said that they had liked the sport, Maths and watching the dance students.
