Today we come to the end of Week 5 and we begin our assessment and reporting season across the College. Our Year 12 class are halfway through their external exams, our Year 10 class will begin their exam block next week and all other classes will be working on completing their assessments. We wish all of our students well during this busy time.

As you are aware, Stephen Street Campus leaders for 2024 have been announced and these students have already been busy taking on extra responsibilities with their new roles. Next week sees the leadership process for our Year 5 students begin at the Junior College. I will be joining Mrs Priest on both Junior Campuses next week to listen to students present their speeches to their peers at Assemblies and then conduct interviews for our applicants. Leadership is not reserved for adults and leadership opportunities come in various shapes and sizes for all ages. Developing student leaders is an important part of Concordia as we want to foster independence, positivity and collaboration skills among our students, so they are better equipped and confident to face any challenges and situations put before them. This week, some of our Year 9 and 10 students were able to demonstrate these leadership skills as they worked alongside our visiting students from Japan. It was wonderful to see them interact with our visitors and show them a little of what school is like in Australia.

Finally, I would like to bring to your attention our Concordia Bridge to Success Scholarship. This scholarship has been made available thanks to the generosity of a rural family. The funds of this scholarship will support the education of a student from a disadvantaged rural background who shows the determination to achieve to the best of their potential. This week we observed Reformation Day on the 31st of October, the day on which Martin Luther (depicted here) published a paper of 95 short Theses about things that he believed needed discussion and change in the church. This date was later seen as the catalyst for what we now call the Reformation. For chapel this week we included an interview with the reformer, who shared his excitement about the scriptural insight that the righteous shall live by faith, an insight that changed Luther’s life and became the key insight of the reformers: you cannot earn God’s grace (Luther tried very hard to do just that), nor can you buy it (the church had established a great fundraiser in that department), but it is freely given by God on account of Christ, who died for our sins and rose again to bring us forgiveness and life with God forever and all are invited to take hold of this by faith.

The church wasn’t ready for change at the time and so sadly there were splits and the followers of Luther and some co-reformers inherited the name Lutheran church – although Luther much preferred evangelical (i.e. gospel centred). Reformation Day is a great reminder for us that we need to constantly look back at the scriptures, focus on Christ, and are invited to walk in faith, trusting in God’s goodness and grace, as we seek to live and serve in this God-given world. And certainly at Concordia these insights motivate us as we work with our students and help them gain meaning, purpose and a good foundation for their lives.

The reformers came up with 4 sola’s (alones) that summarised their insights: by grace alone, through Christ alone, through faith alone, and through scripture alone. (On the internet you erroneously often find 5 solas – including J.S. Bach’s later motto: soli deo gratia (to God alone be the glory) - a good study in how important it is to check “facts” espoused on the internet!)

As we remember the Reformation in 2023, in a world with many issues and problems, we are reminded that Luther and the reformers lived in a similarly tumultuous time, with many people struggling to make sense or see a way forward. The reformers spread their insights out of pastoral concern for people, to bring hope and comfort, to lift people’s eyes to God and recognise the graciousness and love found there. That has not changed and the reformation encourages us to lift our eyes in hope to the God of grace and hope.

May our Lord fill you with this hope and comfort and strengthen you to be bearers of hope in this world!

For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith”. - (Romans 1:17).

All our students should be proud of their efforts and take the time to reflect upon the progress that they have made. Progress is not just measured through the acknowledgement of receiving an award, but through a daily commitment to grow as an individual. Throughout this year I have witnessed the growth that our students have shown through their involvement in class activities, participation in college events, resilience during camps and excursions; and through meaningful interactions with others.

As I reflect upon the year that has passed, I can’t help but feel a deep sense gratitude to be part of such a wonderful College community. One of the strengths of Concordia Lutheran College is fostering a diverse and inclusive community where everyone feels valued and respected. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated group of educators and professionals that work tireless to produce quality outcomes for our students. Thank-you to all our staff that have played a pivotal role in guiding, inspiring and nurturing our students.

I am grateful for all our parents and caregivers who have been invaluable partners in our student’s education. Your unwavering support has contributed immensely to the success of our College community. Whether that be through attending college events, assisting with homework, organising travel arrangements, or consulting with staff on academic progress, your involvement makes a difference in student’s lives. Thank-you for entrusting us with your child’s education and we look forward to strengthening our partnerships in the future.

As we wrap up the end of the 2023 school year, I would encourage our families and students to consider what you have been grateful for this year. Take some time to reflect upon the moments or the opportunities that provided you with happiness. What was it about these things that made it meaningful for you and focus on the positive emotions you experienced? By practicing gratitude regularly, it enables us to relish good experiences, improves overall health, assists us to deal with adversity and builds strong relationships.

Art Talent on Show

In late October, Concordia Lutheran College hosted a remarkable Art Exhibition featuring artwork from all year levels. This stunning display of creativity and talent showcased the artistic achievements of our students. Parents and art enthusiasts were treated to a captivating visual journey through the works of our budding artists. To make the evening even more special, a wine and cheese event was organised for parents, creating a delightful atmosphere for celebrating the artistic achievements of our students.Concordia students demonstrated their exceptional talents on a different stage during the recent Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. The students gave a stellar performance, delivering Queen songs to a packed house. Their outstanding musical skills and electrifying presence left the audience in awe. It was a night to remember, and the students' performance received accolades from all quarters.

International Visitors

In the spirit of nurturing global perspectives and understanding, Concordia welcomed 13 bright young women from Kitatoshima Girls School in Tokyo, Japan. These students are part of a study tour that promises to be a culturally enriching experience for both our international guests and our Concordia community. During their stay, the visiting students participated in activities designed to foster cultural exchange and enhance their English language skills. This not only adds a unique dimension to our learning environment but also reflects our commitment to preparing our students for an increasingly interconnected world. Our Concordia community extended a warm welcome and shared our local culture. Thank you to students and staff who made the visit such a memorable one.

Year 10 Preferred Pathways

I'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mr. Bishop and our Year 10 Preferred Pathways students for their outstanding showcase event this week. The entrepreneurial initiatives presented were nothing short of fantastic, and the students offered honest reflections on both their triumphs and setbacks. From agricultural products to website design and health initiatives, their work throughout the year showcases a level of maturity and knowledge well beyond their years. I have no doubt that they will go on to achieve great things in the future. We look forward to seeing another group take on this year long journey in 2024; producing what I am sure will be even more success.

Year 12 External Exams

As we reach the halfway mark of the external exams, I want to extend my best wishes to our Year 12 students. Your hard work, dedication, and perseverance are truly commendable, and we have every confidence in your abilities to excel in these critical assessments. We pray that your final week of exams will further reflect the wonderful outcomes you deserve.

CLC Sports Evening

Looking ahead, we have our Sports Evening event scheduled for Wednesday, November 8. This is a special occasion when we recognize and celebrate the remarkable achievements of our students throughout 2023. It is also an opportunity to glimpse into the exciting prospects of 2024, which will see a continued expansion of our sporting endeavours and increased opportunities for community sponsors to support the Concordia sports program.

CLC Presentation Night

Our major culminating event for the year is the 2023 Years 6-11 Awards Presentation Night, to be held on Monday 20 November at Empire Theatre. We look forward to celebrating the hard work and achievements of our students, who continue to make life very difficult for our awards committee in determining the recipients of our many prestigious awards.

Finally, as we approach the final three weeks of the term, I want to wish all our students, staff, and families the very best for the coming festive period. While there is always still much to do, we hope our community can also head into the break with a sense of great satisfaction about what has been achieved this year.

• The U13 boys put up another great fight trailing narrowly 3-2 at halftime. They pushed the other team all the way in the second half but were unfortunate to go down in the end.
• The junior girls had the bye but played an impressive friendly match drawing 7-7.
• The senior girls had a great win 3-2 over Fairholme.

Girls Twilight Netball

• Our girls Netball team continued their winning streak with a victory over the Dream Team.

We will be hosting a Staff vs Students Pink Stumps Day because no one should go through breast cancer without the care of a McGrath Breast Care Nurse. McGrath Breast Care Nurses help individuals and their families affected by breast cancer by providing invaluable physical, psychological, and emotional support from the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment.

All funds raised go towards helping the McGrath Foundation reach their goal of 250 nurses by 2025, to work towards ensuring no one misses out on care. So, wear something Pink, buy a Pink snow cone and watch the Staff and students do battle on the pitch, all in support of a worthy cause.

Sport Quote & Joke of the Week

Joke: What goes all the way around the field but never moves? The fence.

This week started off full pace and it feels like our feet are not touching the ground.

Saturday, I collected our Year 9 Googa students, they were all sad to leave after four fun and exciting weeks away but happy to return to the comforts of Boarding. One of our Year 11 students, Joy was admitted to the Toowoomba Hospital. She is now recovering well, with the support and aid of the medical team, and was happy to let you all know she is ok and to share the snap taken from her hospital bed.

We went to see Outback Spectacular on Sunday – one of the best excursions by far to Brisbane. The kids were blown away with the show and thoroughly enjoyed their meal and desserts. Most of all they enjoyed going off site and getting away for a bit.

13 Japanese Students arrived on Monday for a Study Tour. They arrived 2 hours ahead of time, but we were well prepared, and they quickly settled into Boarding life. There was plenty of laughter and singing in the dorms, even some dance moves in front of the mirror. They are a lovely group of girls with a great sense of humor and big appetites to learn all about Australia and our culture.

Tuesday, we visited the peaceful Japanese Gardens, it was delightful with cherry blossoms and chirping birds nested in trees. From there went to Picnic Point, a beautiful spot where you can look out over the Lockyer Valley. It has been a pleasure looking after the girls. Thank you to the Marketing team and Tyler International for all their dedication and hard work.

Our Futsal girls had their first win! George had her very last Futsal game and received a well-deserved Player of the Match. We are so proud of your dedication to this game. Our boys Rugby 7’s had two great games and just fell short of a win. Next time guys.

This weekend we have our Year 10 Boarder Orientation, and we will be taking the students to the movies on Saturday night.
