The Week Ahead - Term 4, Week 8

Monday 23 November to Friday 27 November 2020

From the Head of College

A Busy Week Ahead

This week is the second last week of the 2020 school year. If I look through my diary, I can see that there are many fun events being planned. The final dinners for Year 6 students at both the Warwick Street Campus and the Hume Street Campus will be highlights, along with the Closing Worship and Chapel at all three campuses.

The Warwick Street Campus Musical (Tuesday 24 November), Hume Street Campus Musical (Wednesday 25 November) and the final activities for Stephen Street Campus students on Thursday 26 November will round off our year with students.

Year 8 students will be spending a few days at Mt Binga and our Year 10 students will be involved in the Peer Support program being held around the College. The final The Week Ahead will be published on Friday 27 November.

LYQ Summer Camps

After a rollercoaster year, we can't wait for camps this summer. Camping is such a great way to escape the everyday, learn some new skills, make some great friends, create memories you can treasure forever and learn more about the secure hope that God offers. This summer should be a cracker with some great opportunities in December and January to celebrate the end of the year and start the next with a bang!

To find out more check out the information flyer of some great camping opportunities for young people in Years 3-6 and Years 7-12 in December and January. Keep in mind that new COVID-19 measures mean that places on camp will be limited. This may mean that your favourite camp books out faster than normal.

Financial support is available to families who wish to participate in these summer camps. Please click here to access Financial Support Applications.

If you have any questions about LYQ camps please call us on 07 3511 4080. We can't wait to welcome you to camp this summer!

From the Director

It’s a race to the finish line next week as we complete Term 4, 2020. Week 8 in Term 4 is traditionally a week of celebration and events, and even though we have some slight modifications, these will go ahead this year also.

Our first important event will be on Monday night when staff, parents and Year 6 students come together to celebrate the end of their Junior College journey at the Year 6 dinner. This is a night of reminiscing about their years at WSC as well as talking all things Year 6 in 2020 before the students move into the Middle College.

We also look forward to many of our WSC parents joining us on Wednesday afternoon for an end of year catch up. This will be a “hello” as well as a “goodbye” as it has been a long time since we have seen parents on campus. Please don’t forget to register if you are intending to come and bring your own picnic rug.

Christmas Dress Up Day - Wednesday 25 November

On Wednesday 25 November, we are asking students to come dressed in Christmas clothes and bring along a gold coin donation to go towards the cost of props for the Musical.

One Week to Go!

It hardly seems possible that we are only a week away from the end of the school year. A reminder that our last day of school for the term is Thursday 26 November finishing at 3.10 pm.

With the External Examinations finally over, our Year 12 students have been popping back in for some informal gatherings. Our inaugural Year 12 Brunch on Tuesday morning was a wonderful way to all come together and celebrate the completion of their schooling journey. Feel free to have a look at the photos from this event on our College’s Facebook page.

This morning we recognised our sporting students’ achievements at a very pared-down Sports Breakfast and will be presenting our Years 7-11 students with their academic and outstanding achievement awards in recognition of their achievement and endeavour for the year, today and Monday. As a parent myself, I fully appreciate how strange it feels to not be able to be present at these most significant moments in your child’s life.

Australian Mathematics Competition Results

During the first week of August, we entered almost 40 of our students in the Australian Mathematics Competition. Selected students from Years 7 to 12 had the opportunity to test themselves against students across Australia. Our students achieved phenomenal results and should be proud of their achievements.

Our summary of the results are:

  • 2 High Distinctions, placing students within the top 3% of the country in their year level
  • 10 Distinctions, placing students within the top 20% of the country in their year level
  • 18 Credits, placing students within the top 55% of the country in their year level
  • 7 Proficient and 1 Participation.

Years 11 and 12 - Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA) Applications

Application for students in Year 11 and Year 12 in 2021.

An Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA) is provided to minimise as much as possible, barriers for students whose disability, impairment, medical condition or other circumstances may affect their ability to read, respond or participate in assessment.

If your daughter or son is entering Year 11 or Year 12 in 2021 and you are wanting to support your child through submitting an AARA application, an AARA Medical Report and a Student Statement must be submitted to the Director of Learning and Innovation. Please use the links below. Alternatively, hard copies of the documents are available at Student Services.

After completing the forms, as well as providing proof of a medical diagnosis, these can be handed to Student Services or emailed directly to Wendy.Bowen@concordia.qld.edu.au.

Queensland Curriculum Assessment Authority (QCAA) have changed the AARA application process. They now require medical support documents to be dated the year the AARA is required for. For 2021, all medical documents to support an AARA application must be dated 2021.

If you need more information, please don’t hesitate in contacting the College on 4688 2700 or email me directly at Wendy.Bowen@concordia.qld.edu.au

*The same uniform can be worn across all three sports - this will limit the number of uniforms that students are required to purchase. Please note that sports uniform items are for purchase, not loan. Uniforms may be purchased in the new year, however these items will not have the option of having the student's surname printed on the back.  All orders that are made this year will have the option of having the name printed at no additional cost.
