"One of the Best Things I’ve Ever Done": Gabrielle Leahy Reflects on Her Concordia Internship
It’s not often an internship is described as life-changing, but for university student Gabrielle Leahy, her time at Concordia Lutheran College has been just that. As she wraps up her final week, Gabby reflects on the experiences that shaped her, the people who welcomed her, and the strong sense of belonging she felt throughout her time with the College’s Marketing and Communications team.
“This is my last week. My last day will be Friday, and it’s definitely bittersweet,” she said. “I’ll be focusing on the final stretch of my degree, which finishes at the end of August, and then I’m open to whatever comes next.”
Over the past two months, Gabby has worked across a range of projects from content creation and social media to photography, videography and writing for the College website. She has played an active role in day-to-day communications while also contributing to longer-term initiatives that will continue to roll out after her departure.
“I’ve been lucky to be part of so many things. One highlight was photographing the Track and Field Carnival at the end of Term 2. That was a lot of fun.”
More than just a placement requirement, this internship became a meaningful chapter in Gabby’s professional journey. From the very beginning, she felt part of the team.
“From the moment I walked through the reception doors and was greeted by Claire, I felt supported. The team involved me in strategic discussions, shared their experience, and made me feel genuinely included. Even something as simple as sitting together at lunch helped me feel welcome.”
Working within a school environment for the first time came with a few surprises. Gabby quickly noticed the level of dedication among staff and how deeply involved everyone was in the life of the College.
“Everyone contributes something meaningful here. It’s not just a workplace. It’s a community where every person makes an impact. That’s rare.”
It didn’t take long for Gabby to see what makes Concordia different.
“There’s a real ‘Concordia difference’. Whether it’s the students or the staff, there’s a passion for the everyday moments. People here care. It’s clear this is a place that offers something special.”
She describes the College culture as open, welcoming and inclusive, all values that align with Concordia’s broader commitment to academic excellence and student wellbeing.
“No matter who you are, or what you know (or don’t know), there is always space for you here. I honestly feel like I’ll always be welcomed back.”
There were plenty of professional highlights, but Gabby says one of her favourite parts of the week was the Friday staff morning teas.
“It’s the small things like that which make you feel like part of the team.”
As she prepares to move on, Gabby says her time at Concordia has left a lasting impact.
“I’ve learned so much, especially how to think more strategically about communications. There are so many moving parts you don’t notice from the outside, but the team here thinks of it all. It’s really inspiring.”
In her final week, it’s been the positive feedback from staff that has meant the most.
“Hearing people say that I’ve made a real contribution to the College means so much. Those warm-and-fuzzy moments really stick with you.”
Belinda Sanders, Director of Communications, says Gabby brought more than just talent to the team, she brought a fresh perspective and enthusiasm that made a difference.
“Gabby has been an absolute asset to our team,” Belinda said. “She approaches everything with curiosity, positivity and a real willingness to learn. It’s been a joy to have her at Concordia, and I have no doubt she’ll go on to do great things.”
To future interns, Gabby offers this advice: “Don’t be afraid to be wrong. Concordia is one of the safest, most supportive learning environments I’ve ever experienced. It’s the perfect place to grow.”
And to the wider Concordia community, she shares a heartfelt thank you.
“Thank you to everyone who gave me a smile, helped me when I got lost on campus, or made me feel welcome. It’s meant a lot.”
As for summing up her time at Concordia in just one sentence?
“One of the best things I’ve ever done.”
