Dear Parents and Caregivers

Our Year 12 students need to be congratulated on how well they have managed the Mock Exam Block experience for themselves. They will again be reminded that the Mock Exams are an opportunity to gauge where they are at in terms of their final preparation with the end-of-year External Assessments in Term 4. This upcoming timeline will allow both the students and their teachers to review and fine-tune where the Mock exams have indicated a further focus is required. Good luck to our Year 11 students as they get ready for their Exam Block which takes place next week.

Well done to our Year 3 and 11 students on the many personal and group successes achieved at their respective camps last week. The Year 11 camp has been a great segway for these students into the Year 11 Leadership Speeches which took place on Tuesday. Thank you and congratulations to those Year 11 students, nominating for the 2024 Girl’s and Boy’s College Captain roles, who courageously stepped up and addressed the senior college and staff. Once again, the caliber of the candidates and speeches delivered have affirmed that Concordia will be in excellent hands in 2024 when these leaders are announced.

The importance of Reading, books, literature and cultivating a love of reading have been the rage across the College this week. Thank you to the many students, with your help of course, and staff for getting into the swing and spirit of Book Week. Did you know that reading aloud to children builds empathy, creates a lifelong love of reading, improves language and listening skills, facilitates important and/or difficult conversations, activates and empowers imagination and is fun!

I have also had the privilege of attending the Paul Morton Choral Festival at the empire theatre on Tuesday night. Congratulations and thank you to those students who were such wonderful ambassadors for Concordia. It is so affirming to see this area of College life thriving as we continue to strive to provide an all-round program and experiences for our students. Thank you to Mr. Neil Roche-Kelly and Ms. Christina Marangelli for their dedication, leadership and passion in this area of College life.

Next week will see us host the first of our Grandparents’ Day events across the College with the Senior College kicking off these celebrations next week on Friday. As a grandparent myself, I have come to appreciate the importance of family so much more and the pivotal role played by grandparents in providing and being part of the moral, social and family fibre of society. This week I’d like to stop and for us to focus on how grandparents offer a unique perspective. When a child turns 10 years old, most grandparents are around 50 – 70 years of age offering a wealth of experience and knowledge to impart onto their grandchildren. We can learn so much from the past that can be translated into benefits in the present and future. We have all heard the saying, “If only I knew then what I know now!” Grandparents are walking, talking and living examples of the past and family history. The role of mentorship is vast, time consuming and at times complicated for us as parents. Having Grandparents take on this role simplifies the whole process with Grandparents offering guidance from a nurturing standpoint.

Gratitude. Learning from the past helps us to learn about the evolution of humanity – where we have come from and who we are today. Having a simple conversation about Grandpa or Grandma’s first job can help us to develop gratitude for our current employment circumstances and arrangements. Developing a sense of gratitude and perspective helps us to be happy for who we are and what we have.

Listening. Good communication is more about listening than speaking. Sometimes we need to vent, to have someone to truly listen to what we have to say. In turn, we feel valued. Grandparents have a listening style like no other, stepping away from being judgemental and using a lifetime of experience to absorb the words before replying with well thought out answers. True mentors help us to understand ourselves by increasing our self-awareness. Grandparents offer a solemn ear and the gift of clean listening.

Family ties. Grandparents are the glue that binds a family together. The proof is there on special occasions or on a weekend when families tend to come together more often. They are there to help us understand the importance of togetherness and comradery.

Perspective. How we view the world has an immense influence on our attitude and behaviours. To have multiple perspectives in life assists us to make better decisions. To see things from a variety of viewpoints can only benefit us, especially when making those really important decisions. , like finance and career choices. The more and greater variety of perspectives the better for our children.

Grandparents offer us a form of mentorship like no other, teach us lessons from the past and offer the greatest gift of all…unconditional love. [Acknowledgement: Paul Drewitt].

See you in September

Concordia Lutheran College has made a change to the dates of the Open Morning. It was scheduled for the morning of August 8, but will now be a week of “See you in September”.

This new event will take place for a week from September 11th and will offer opportunity to view the college and its facilities, as well as meet teachers and members of the staff. It will help families see the authentic college environment and ask questions of both staff and students.

As always, parents and carers are welcome to come and inspect any of our Concordia campuses on any school day of the week.

Central Zone Track & Field Carnival 2023
What a beautiful day for our athletes and spectators at the Central Zone Track & Field Carnival on Wednesday 9 August. Our athletes were rewarded with great results for their effort. Ten students were selected for the Central Zone team to compete at the Darling Downs Regional Trials held on Tuesday 15 August.

Well done to all of our athletes that competed and a big thank you to the people who helped get our students ready for these carnivals, ranging from the admin staff to our sports coaches from SSC, Mr Mathews and Mr Anderton and Mr Biscoe. Thank you to parents who have helped in getting students to training, before and after school for the past ten weeks in the lead up this term.

Our staff on the day were magnificent in looking after the team with a big thank you to Mrs Lynch and Mr Nick Morgan. It was also nice to see so many parents there on the day to cheer on our team in their events. Our athletes should be commended on their sportsmanship and cheering on of their mates.

Special mention to the following athletes who gained selection in the Central Zone team for 2023:
Arabella Knopke, Charlie Lowis, Ajah Ayii, Thomas Richards, Emily Evans, Thomas Wise, William Spoelder, Maddison Callaghan, Reuben Frost and Andrew Ye. We wish these students all the best in their training, and in this next level of competition, aiming for selection in the Darling Downs team to compete at the State Titles in Brisbane.

Darling Downs Regional Track & Field Carnival
On Tuesday 15 August our selected Central Zone athletes competed at the Darling Downs trials at Harristown SHS. This was a culmination of ten weeks of early morning training and afternoon training sessions at both campuses with some great results for our athletes. Several students qualifyed in their events to go to the State Championships. Special mention to our 9 year olds, Ajah Ayii and Thomas Richards who won their respective 800 m events in great fashion.

Congratulations to Andrew Ye, Charlie Lowis, and Arabella Knopke on their selection in the Darling Downs team to compete in October in Brisbane, an amazing achievement. Well done!

Southwest Qld Touch “Swans Cup”
This term our Junior College Touch football teams competed in the “Swans Cup” a fantastic initiative by the Southwest Qld Touch development staff to provide an opportunity for our students to play in a 6-week competition against other schools in the region on a Monday night at the Kearneys Spring Touch complex, improving their skills and learning about the great game. This is the second year we have entered teams in this competition, with the majority of our players experiencing their first taste of this sport against much older competition. There were some very valuable lessons learnt but more importantly some great fun had each week playing with their teammates.

Our students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the experience, proving to be very competitive in each game with our mixed team making it through to the third versus fourth playoff.

Cricket Gala Day
Recently some of our Junior College students competed in the “Woolworths Cricket Blast School Cup” at Queens Park against several other primary schools from around Toowoomba. This competition was aimed at teaching the students the fundamentals of cricket and being inclusive while having a ton of fun along the way. Our team enjoyed the day immensely and are already asking when the next one is scheduled to be involved, with our aim to enter more teams in the future on this day.

A big thank you also to Mr Mathews from SSC who assisted and umpired on the day for our team.

JC Year 6 Cairns Trip

On Monday 4 September to Friday 8 September our JC Year 6 students will be attending the exciting Cairns Trip. Please find attached Parent Information letter and packing list.

All students are to be dropped at Hume Street Campus by 6am for a 6.45am departure.

JC Year 6 Cairns Trip - Great Barrier Reef Education Experience Program

Our JC Year 6 class will depart and head to Cairns in September.

To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Queensland Government, through the Great Barrier Reef Education Experience Program, provided a subsidy to the school of $150.00 per student who will be attending the excursion.

We wish all of our Year 6 students, their teachers and our parent helpers, a safe trip. We look forward to following them each day through their Seesaw blogs.

Hello to all our Boarding families.

Wow, 3 weeks to go until end of Term 3! I know I keep saying it,” where has the time gone”. Our Year 12 students have completed their mock exams, and it's time to get all the finishing touches for the Graduation Dinner sorted. Accommodation, dresses, suits, make up, hair, accessories, and Transport etc. What an exciting and emotional time for all Year 12 students.

During the week I had the pleasure to watch the Battle of the Bands in our Gym between staff and Year 12. What a great show of talent. Everyone was enjoying themselves immensely.

This week we congratulate Bella Clark - Player of the Match for Hockey and Kara Tapau - Player of the match for Volleyball. Well done ladies. Congratulations to Evie Yeatman for her DD’s Success.

I have spent the past few days in Tasmania with my husband, visiting family and friends. I have to say it is a beautiful state to visit and look forward to going back sometime soon. As we were travelling around, I noticed on the number plates “Explore the possibilities”. I Instantly thought of our college “Embrace the possibilities” and that’s what we did. We ate a huge amount of Seafood and breathed in the beautiful crisp fresh air (it was very cold). We also purchased a lot of chocolate and indulged in Daci $ Daci Pastries. Thanks to Karen from Student services who gave us the great tip! The coffee and other drinks were also very enjoyable. The wildlife took us by surprise as we spotted a Koala, possum, wombats, and many baby wallabies, but we did not see any Tasmanian Devils. The holiday was wonderful, and I have recharged my batteries and am now looking forward to the next few weeks.

In my absence the students were all well cared for with the regular shopping trips and Cloud9.
