The Week Ahead - Term 3, Week 9

Monday 6 September to Friday 10 September 2021

Dear Parents and Caregivers

This weekend will see Concordia Lutheran College celebrating 75 years of existence and influence in the Toowoomba community and educational landscape. 75 years is an exceptional milestone for any school, but more so for one which started out as a boarding and day school respectively for the farming families of the district and beyond, as well as establishing itself as a place of excellence and learning for the town folk of Toowoomba.

This coming weekend will provide us, as the “Class of 2021”, with the opportunity to thank and acknowledge those communities of students, parents, staff and educators who have gone before us. Ultimately, bricks and mortar will outlive all of us, but it’s our joint dedication to the task in hand and how we treat one another which will stand the test of time. Enjoy the celebrations, listening to others’ stories as well as reconnecting with past students, parents and colleagues this weekend. I look forward to seeing you there.

Viva la Musica!

On Friday evening I had the privilege to attend the Farewell to Winter concert in the quite intimate performance space in the Dance Studio. We were treated to some wonderful music, from Big Band to strings and choral performances. It is wonderful to be able to hold such a concert in these times of frequent restrictions on large gatherings, and it was obvious that both conductors and students enjoyed the performance. I certainly did.

Community Blood Drive - Australian Red Cross

We’re supporting the QLD and Northern NSW School Community Blood Drive

As a member of the Concordia Lutheran College community, you already know the amazing things we can achieve when we work together!

Now, we’ve got a new challenge on our hands – the QLD and Northern NSW School Community Blood Drive.

By uniting as one, schools throughout QLD and Northern NSW aim to give 800 life-saving donations from 1 August to 31 October, but we’ll need your help. After all, it’ll take a team to hit the target!

Barefoot Bowls

The Barefoot Bowls event will now be held on Sunday 17 October. Those who have registered can roll their registration over to the new date (you do not need to re-register) or, if are unable to attend, they can arrange a refund from the Business Office.

If you were unable to make it on the previously scheduled weekend but would like to attend in October, good news! Click here to register your attendance.

From the Director

My Dad passed on from this life about 12 years ago. He was one of the most influential persons in my life and I will always be grateful to him. This poem describes him and many of our dads perfectly. Thank you, dads, for everything you do. You mean a lot to us and we pray you have a wonderful weekend.

What Makes a DAD
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagles’ flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard see,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it Dad.

Festival of Learning Update

This week has seen a flurry of painting, gluing, creating, 3D printing, making light shows and finishing off projects for our Festival of Learning. I have had conversations about Newton's Law of Gravity and Motion, heard (not understood) a whole new language surrounding the 3D printers, what animals live in the Australian habitat and how milk and cheese are made. The students are super excited about sharing their learning with you all at our Festival of Learning.

Come and join the festivities. Hot food vans will be onsite in the Junior Playground. Come and enjoy something to eat while listening to our SSC Rock Band playing. You can then move through the classrooms and be amazed by the student's term of learning.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, please register your attendance by Monday 6 September via the link below. Please check in via the Check in QLD app on the night.

From the WSC Director

The rain and fog yesterday didn’t dampen the spirits of our WSC Dads as they joined their children for our annual Father’s Day Breakfast. It was wonderful to see so many of our Dads come along as they enjoyed a sausage sizzle breakfast and some fierce handball competition.

Our Dads were also great sports as they dressed up with their kids to have their photo taken in our “Dad’s Day Photo Booth”. We wish all of our Concordia Dads a very Happy Father’s Day and I hope you all enjoy spending time with your precious families on Sunday.

Stephen Street Campus

Celebrating Grandparents' and our 75th Anniversary

Stephen Street Campus has been humming with the sounds of whipper snippers, mowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers and high-pressure cleaners as we make final preparations for Grandparents' Day and our 75th Anniversary celebrations on Saturday.

There is certainly a buzz in the air. If you have come up our main driveway, you may have noticed the gorgeous arbour that has been made by Mr Geoffrey Becker, past student and current staff member, and donated by our 2021 Stephen Street Campus Student Council. This reinstatement was inspired by some of the very early images of the Pear Shape garden, where an arbour can be seen.

What’s on in Visual Art

During Term 3, the Arts Department hosted the Concordia Archibald Prize for 2021. The quality of work was outstanding. A big thank you to those students who participated and submitted an entry. Year 9 student Charlotte Townsing had the winning entry with her technical graphite drawing of her peer and friend, Milly Gormley. Charlotte has displayed incredible talent across the Arts since joining our Concordia community this year.

Under the BYOD program, all students are required to bring their own device for use in all classes. The BYOD Handbook has been created to explain how the program operates, set out expectations of parents and students and provide information about device minimum specifications. This handbook is available in Parent Lounge (School Links > Stephen Street Campus) and on the College's website.

Boarding

Boarding News

Hi, folks! Yes, only two weeks to go and your children will be returning home to spend the Term 3 break with you. They are all looking forward to travel day.

Today as I walked around the boarding house, I noticed how lovely the grounds are looking. Lawns have been cut and with the rain we had on Tuesday, it has freshened everything up. The girls' plants are thriving.

We are all looking forward to the celebrations on Saturday for the 75th Anniversary of Concordia. A mammoth job for all the organisers.

Our Year 12 students, in the second week of mock exams, are looking a tad more relaxed with most exams over. Now the wait for the results begins!
