Materials

Note: The materials for these artworks have been purchased from discount stores in Toowoomba. You can still make these artworks if you don't have the materials - options are provided throughout.

  • Blue, yellow and green coloured paper (we purchased a MontMarte book of 120 sheets with red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple from a discount store for $6)
  • Glue
  • Pens, pencils or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Shells (optional)
  • Sand (optional)
  • Stickers (optional) - we used mermaid and sea creature stickers

    Method - Summer

    1. Take a blue piece of paper to make the background.
    2. Take a yellow sheet of paper and tear it to make a beach.
    3. Glue the yellow piece of paper to the bottom of the blue sheet of paper, so that you have a yellow beach and a blue background.
    4. Draw a water line across from the beach to show the difference between the water and the sky.
    5. Draw a tree trunk from the yellow sand with a brown or black pen. Colour in the tree trunk.
    6. Tear small strips of green paper, approximately 1cm wide and 10cm long.
    7. Using the glue, stick the green strips of paper to the top of the tree trunk to form the leaves.
    8. Stick sea creature stickers (or draw sea creatures) into the water.
    9. Cut out a circle of yellow paper and stick into the sky section to make a sun.
    10. Draw wavy lines in the sky to be birds.
    11. Place spots of glue on the yellow sand area and stick small shells onto the beach.
    12. Spread glue over the yellow sand area and then sprinkle sand over the glue.

    Options:

    • No coloured paper? No worries! If you have white paper, use this as the background and colour the yellow sand, blue sky, green tree leaves and yellow sun.
    • Instead of using the sea creature stickers, draw some sea creatures into the water area.
    • The sand and shells are optional (and messy). It's ok if you leave these steps out.
