Learning about the Seasons - Winter

Discover the four seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter - through the use of these fun collages. This page focuses on Winter. There are opportunities to extend learning for students who show an interest in this topic.

Winter Collage Artwork

Learning Intentions:

Students will know the difference between the four seasons and be able to describe what each season is known for. Students will also develop their fine motor skills through art.

Materials

Note: The materials for these artworks have been purchased from discount stores in Toowoomba. You can still make these artworks if you don't have the materials - options are provided throughout.

  • White paper
  • Blue coloured paper (we purchased a MontMarte book of 120 sheets with red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple from a discount store for $6)
  • Glue
  • Pens, pencils or crayons
  • Letter stamps (optional)

Method

  • Cut out three circles of white paper to form the snowman's body and head. Make the three circles different sizes.
  • Draw a line across the bottom of the blue paper to be the ground.
  • Glue the circles to the blue paper  - the largest circle on the bottom, then the middle sized circle then the small circle at the top.
  • Using a black pen, draw buttons on the snowman's body and a face on his head. Use an orange pen to draw a carrot nose.
  • Draw sticks coming out the side of the middle circle to be his arms.
  • Draw smaller sticks coming out the top of his head for hair.
  • Draw some clouds in the sky.
  • Tear small pieces of white paper and scrunch into balls. 
  • Glue the scrunched pieces of paper onto the blue background to be snow.
  • (Optional) Use the letter stamps to stamp the word WINTER onto the picture.

Options

  • Instead of using blue paper as the background, use a blue crayon, pencil or felt pen to colour in the blue sky.
  • You can draw the snowman rather than cutting out circles.
  • The letter stamps are optional (purchased from a discount store in the craft section)
